Scented candles add a warm, cosy, and aromatic touch to any space. They are perfect for relaxation, mood enhancement, and even thoughtful handmade gifts. Making your scented candles at home is an easy and enjoyable DIY project. Follow this step-by-step tutorial to create customized scented candles with your favourite fragrances and colours.

Materials You’ll Need

Before you start, gather the following materials:

  • Wax (Soy wax, paraffin wax, or beeswax)

  • Wick (Choose the appropriate size for your container)

  • Fragrance or essential oil (Lavender, vanilla, citrus, etc.)

  • Dye (optional) (Candle dye or crayon shavings)

  • Container (Glass jars, tins, or ceramic containers)

  • Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl

  • Wooden skewer or chopstick (To hold the wick in place)

  • Glue or wick stickers (To secure the wick to the container base)

  • Thermometer (To monitor wax temperature)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area

Choose a clean, well-ventilated space, cover your work surface with newspaper or parchment paper to catch spills, and arrange your materials for easy access.

Step 2: Secure the Wick

Use a dab of glue or a wick sticker to attach the wick to the centre of your container’s base. Wrap the top end of the wick around a wooden skewer or chopstick and rest it on top of the container to keep it upright.

Step 3: Melt the Wax

Using a double boiler, melt the wax over low to medium heat. If using a microwave, heat the wax in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until thoroughly melted. Use a thermometer to ensure the wax doesn’t exceed 180°F (82°C).

Step 4: Add Fragrance and Color

Once the wax has melted, please remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly (around 140°F or 60°C). Stir in your chosen fragrance or essential oil (typically 1 ounce per pound of wax). If adding colour, mix in candle dye or crayon shavings at this stage.

Step 5: Pour the Wax

Slowly pour the scented wax into your prepared container, ensuring the wick stays centred. Leave about half an inch of space at the top of the container.

Step 6: Let It Set

Allow the candle to cool and harden for several hours at room temperature. Please do not move it during this process to avoid cracks or air bubbles.

Step 7: Trim the Wick

Once the wax has completely solidified, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm). This will ensure a clean and even burn when the candle is lit.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Handmade Scented Candle

Your homemade scented candle is now ready! Light it up to fill your space with a soothing aroma, or wrap it as a gift for a loved one.

Tips for the Best Homemade Candles

  • Use high-quality wax and fragrance oils for a longer-lasting, better-smelling candle.

  • Avoid adding too much fragrance oil, which can affect the wax’s consistency.

  • Test burn your candle before gifting it to ensure an even burn.

  • Experiment with layering colours and scents to create unique candle designs.

Creating scented candles at home is a fun and rewarding craft that allows you to personalize scents and styles according to your preference. Give it a try and bring a touch of homemade warmth to your space!
